What is a Heat Pump Water Heater?
Heat pump water heaters use electricity to move heat from one place to another instead of generating heat directly. Therefore, they can be two to three times more energy efficient than conventional electric resistance water heaters. To move the heat, heat pumps work like a refrigerator in reverse.
How a Heat Pump Works
Just like heat pump HVAC systems, heat pump water heaters work on the principle of heat transfer, meaning they move heat from one place to another rather than generating it. Heat pumps extract heat from the air and transfer it to water that runs through coils in the water tank. Some configurations include a hybrid electric heateing element for rapid recharge during high demand scenarios like when you have visitors. The electric heating element only works if demand exceeds pre-set heating cycles which makes it both convienent and efficient.
